Peter Davies, University of Edinburgh: “I teach a course on Holocaust testimony, touching amongst other things on issues of gender, sexuality, and different victim groups. This text is an early and iconic account from the perspective of an Austrian male homosexual. We look at questions of identity and sexual violence, and at the difficulty of finding an appropriate genre and language in which to write about these experiences, and we link the need to bear witness to political struggles in Austria in the 1970s. ‘Heger’ is a pseudonym, so we also talk about anonymity and the question of finding a place from which to speak.”
